Virginia Tech’s IT Department wins Governor’s Award
The Virginia Tech Center for Geospatial Information Technology Department is being recognized for their efforts to make Virginia roads safer.
Since 2011, they have been working with the Virginia Department of Moor Vehicles to target problem areas for crashes and what caused them.
Data from every crash in Virginia is sent to them. They then collect data on where the crash was, what caused it and whether it was fatal or not.
They say their goal is to get Virginia to 0 fatal crashes on our highways.
Kitty Hancock, Associate Professor in Civil and Environmental Engineering says right now there are 130,000 fatal crashes a year in across our state.
That’s why each day, at all hours around 15 undergrad and graduate students at Virginia Tech are working to get data to the ones on the scene such as law enforcement.
