Med Beat: VCOM earns accreditation to open its 4th medical school
The Edward Via College of Osteopathic Medicine announced Friday that it has received accreditation approval to recruit students for its new campus in Monroe, Louisiana.
This is the fourth campus for the medical school, which was founded in Blacksburg. VCOM said in a news release that it expects to enroll more than 625 students across the four campuses, making it among the largest U.S. medical schools.
VCOM in May received an initial license from the University of Louisiana Board of Regents to establish a branch campus at the University of Louisiana Monroe. The Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation followed with initial accreditation approval.
VCOM-Louisiana is a public-private partnership with ULM, in which faculty and research resources will be shared.
It is modeled on VCOM’s partnership with Virginia Tech. VCOM was founded 18 years ago to train physicians for rural, medically underserved areas of Appalachia and has graduated more than 2,200 physicians from its Blacksburg campus.
